Internet Marketing & E-Commerce

It's important to understand basic terminology to ensure that we know what we are talking about when we discuss Internet marketing. It's not the same as e-commerce or e-commerce marketing.

Internet marketing is the process of using the Internet for marketing. This is more than just the World Wide Web or maintaining a website. The Internet has a variety of “services” that range from email to streaming media that can be used for marketing purposes. The key idea is that the Internet is a new medium that a company can use to reach its objectives, as well as a force in business to which most companies have to adapt.

E-commerce is the process of buying and selling products and services electronically. A component of Internet marketing is to drive sales – both on the ground, and by integrating online and traditional marketing tactics to generate online transactions.

You have probably heard of the terminology “B2B” or “B2C” - business-to-business or business-to-consumer. During this class, we’re going to look at a whole host of other examples, so it’s a good idea to be familiar with other acronyms that are being used currently in e-commerce that businesses, organizations, and consumers are dealing with online.
