Graphing Tool Help

This graphing tool has four tabs running down the center of the tool. Can you see them? They are called Labels, Data, Groups, and Print. This help page summarizes the function of each tab. If you return to your graphing tool, you will have to reopen this window by clicking help again.

LABELS TAB

  1. Enter the title of your graph in the Graph Title box. Call it whatever you like, but label it well so that you know what you are looking at when you do your speedback assignment.
  2. Label the X-axis. Remember, that is the Axis that runs across the bottom. Based on the example in your course manual, what do you think your X-axis label should be?
  3. Now label the Y-axis. Refer to the example in your course manual if you need to.
  4. Now set the Min Value - that's minimum value and it means the least number of things you will be graphing. You figure that out by looking at the legend for your map coloring exercise. You are graphing number of counties. What is the fewest number of counties in any of your categories? What do you think the greatest number of counties in any of the five categories will be? (You can come back and adjust this if you wish to.)
  5. You can change the grid lines if you wish. You don't have to.

DATA TAB

  1. Items refers to the number of bars you will have on your graph. How many will there be? (Hint: Look at your legend. How many colors are there?
  2. You only have one group in this exercise.
  3. Item 1 is your first category. You should probably put the smallest number of people per square mile as the first category.
  4. Enter a label where it says label 1. I entered "1 to 9" as my label for the first item.
  5. ENter the value for Item 1 where it says Group 1 Value. How many counties fall into the 1 to 9 people per square mile category? Enter that number here.
  6. Click the blue arrow in the middle left of the activity next to "Item 1" to proceed to "Item 2". Label item 2. Now enter the value for item 2.
  7. Label all five items and enter values.

GROUPS

  1. We aren't using groups in this graph, but if you wanted to enter more than one group for each Item (value) on your graph, you would use the Groups tab.

Print TAB

  1. When you are done, click the Labels to see how your graph looks. You can make adjustments to grid lines or min and max values now if you want to.
  2. When you are happy with your graph, click the Print Tab and print it off. Remember you'll need it for your Speedback Assignment.
