Lesson 2: What Christopher Columbus and Ptolemy already knew.

Road maps

We will start with road maps. You have probably used a road map and know that the primary purpose of road maps is for navigation. Some road maps cover large areas and only include major roads. Others cover small areas and include all of the roads and trails in an area.

Figure 2.2.1, Utah's major freeways. (“Utah Reference Map,” National Atlas of the United States, 2004. http://nationalatlas.gov/ printable/reference.html#list)

Figure 2.2.1 shows major freeways, but it does not include most other roads. You could use it to chart your course from Salt Lake City to St. George. It includes some of the larger towns along the way, which makes it possible for you to determine where you want to stop for gas, but there is not enough detail to help you find your way around Salt Lake City or any of the other communities.

Some road maps are more detailed and cover smaller geographical areas. Figure 2.2.2 shows the main roads in Salt Lake City. Find Salt Lake City in Figure 2.2.1. Notice how both maps show the main interstate, I-15, but Figure 2.2.2 also shows the roads in Salt Lake that connect to I-15.
