FREE online courses on Is Your Team Effective - Excellence in Team Work - Overcoming work related problems

Team performance is often affected by company rules, regulations and procedures causing delays and difficulties for the team. At such a stage the team could opt for the support of its sponsors and network of contacts in senior management to work towards a smoother road. This helps to influence reticent colleagues and speed up the approval processes.

Often it is evident that outsider causes the problem within the team. Individuals outside a team due to disrupt

efficiency of a team:

  • Work pressures;
  • Conservatism;
  • Jealousy;
  • Self-protection or
  • Stubbornness

In such a situation head on conflict should be avoided and the problem should be resolved informally. The influences or decision-maker could personally deal with the problem or else the senior management could resolve the situation if need be.

Keep in mind

  • The team has better chance of success if the team allies are placed high.
  • For maintenance of sponsor and influencers time should be allocated.
  • Consult regularly the team sponsors for their advice.
  • Regard with respect and caution the member who has influence over the senior decision maker.

    The lion as the team leader

Once a lion, a wolf and a fox got together and killed a bull. Each one was to take one third of the kill. The wolf proceeded to take its share. Then the lion roared and shouted, “Don't touch the kill. I'll take one-third because I was a team member. I'll take another one-third because I was your team leader. Now, one-third is left, you can take it if you dare.” The fox and the wolf became afraid of their own lives. They decided to flee and the lion enjoyed itself the whole kill.

The team leader should look after the interest of his team and not act like a dominant superior.
