You As A Team Member

Your role as a team member makes you responsible for team objectives, team strategies and team processes. Teamwork implies different roles and responsibilities where people take leadership positions. A sole team leader cannot handle all the responsibilities. Therefore, the teamwork is divided among team members according to their job profile. Each member has his share of responsibilities and contribution to the output of the team.

 

How to participate in your team

Being part of a team involves participation. There are three fundamentals of participation.

Introduction

The individuals who share a common goal need to interact with each other realize their efforts are uncoordinated and unaggregated. Interaction is important both during task performance and socially. Social interaction includes:

  • Lunches
  • Informal chats
  • Sporting events
  • Parties

Benefits of Interaction

  • Strengthens the social bonding;
  • Helps in cohesion;
  • Familiarity enables people to comprehend each other;
  • Helps in exchange of information;
  • Pro notes communication;
  • Co-ordinates individual members.

Difficulties without interaction

  • Important information remains unexchanged;
  • Built up expectations do not match reality;
  • Views of the team members diverge;
  • Perceptions of team members may be incorrect;
  • Misunderstandings may lead to conflicts
  • Task process may suffer from lack of co-ordinations.
  • Lowers team effectiveness,

Information Sharing

  • Monitoring information sharing is essential for team effectiveness. The shared information can be both rich and poor. The more the information alters the understanding, the richer it is.
  • The medium of information transfer is determined by its richness.
  • Least rich information – By paper or Electronic mail
  • Richer information – Form of telephone or video conferencing
  • Most rich information – People talk face to face
  • Information transformation gets richer with voice inflexion, facial expression, body posture and gestures. In face-to-face meetings exploration of issues in depth is largely possible.
