Human beings cover themselves in various unwanted habits, both personal and social. Six steps could be followed to overcome them:

 

1.                  Identify the habit you want to change:

Step 1: Pinpoint the undesired habit

Step 2: See how often it occurs before you plan to change it.

Step 3: Study how much you've changed

 

2.                  Reason out why you want to change the habit:

a.                  Write a statement of intention e.g. Do not say “I will study harder”. Instead say, “I will study for two hours”.

b.                  Mention your intention to other people, they will help you to change.

c.                  Set you intention to near future e.g. “I will not drink at the party next week”.

d.                  Count you series of success.

 

3.                  Examine the situation

a.                  Control the stimuli that sets off the undesired behavior

b.                  Prevent the unwanted response

c.                  Inflict self-punishment at the unwanted behavior

d.                  Shape up the desired behavior

 

4.                  Search for the immediate consequence of the act

a.                  You may have to change other people's behavior

b.                  Avoid the company of people with the undesired behavior

c.                  Change the situation so that the unwanted consequence does not occur

 

5.                  Establish the desired habit

a.                  Look for friends who encourage your progress

b.                  Reward yourself when successful

c.                  Monitor yourself

d.                  Make the rewards more difficult to earn.

 

The fact that you are doing something for your own good can sever as very powerful reward for yourself.
