Globe projection

Figure 2.1.2, (Globe, USGS, 2006. http://erg.usgs.gov/isb/pubs/MapProjections/projections.html)

Description: Globe projections are a spherical model of the earth.

Advantages:

  • the most accurate way to depict the entire earth
  • direction, shape, distances, and area can all be accurately represented

Disadvantages:

  • impossible to show great detail—even a globe the size of a football stadium would have minimal details
  • expensive to make
  • bulky to carry
  • hard to store
