Improve interpersonal communication skills for they are the backbone of success for any organization. Organizations where people readily share information among their colleagues develop a feeling of oneness.

Every employee should develop on a subject he feels confident about and share the same with others at regular intervals.

Be attentive to cues

Visually predisposed people speak fast in contrast to emotional people who speak at a snail's pace. Auditory-people speak with a clear, resonant and deep voice. Let your conversation have visual, verbal and emotional contents so as to satisfy people who may be inherently predisposed toward any one or two of these.

The verbal content too should try to describe things and situations in all the three ways especially if you are not aware of the predisposition of the other person or if you are talking to a mixed group. For example, you may fail to make an emotional person understand effectively what you want him to do, if you restrict yourself only to visual and logical verbal content in your communication.

Evoke the desired response

  • Use ‘why', ‘what', ‘where', ‘how, and ‘who', in such a way that they elicit precise and useful information.

  • ‘How' is more relevant and more positive than ‘why'. Instead of asking why your subordinate could not perform well, ask him how he can plan to do better next time.

  • Why something has failed has little value unless it is used to learn the necessary lessons and to plan for improved performance next time.
